FOR & 35+ national groups call for end to Iran violence; FOR plans U.S. nationwide candlelight vigil for Iran
With Iran in turmoil following the June 12th national elections, dozens of U.S. peace and religious leaders, including FOR, called on June 24th for the Iranian government to work to end the violence. This statement followed on one released on June 17th by FOR to both the Iranian government and opposition leaders, urging a peaceful resolution of the crisis. Read FOR's statement here and press release here.
On July 3, 1988, the USS Vincennes shot down Iran Air flight #655, killing all 290 passengers. The tragedy received minimal media attention in the United States, and U.S. military officers actually received medals and commendations. This date is marked in Iran each year with memorial ceremonies.
FOR has called for a public apology to Iran by the U.S. government and military, and a national day of solidarity actions on July 3rd through candlelight vigils and other actions. Click here to learn more about this effort.
